This is a huge surprise. Saïd Taghmaoui, a French actor, not very well known in North America - some might remember him from John Wick 3 & Wonder Woman - was offered the main villain role in EX4! And he declined it due to conflicting schedules.
Although he's a very fine actor, he's not someone I would qualify as an icon of action movies. Whereas we had actors such as JCVD and Gibson play the main villains in previous installments, Taghmaoui is not in that league.
This is somehow concerning that EX4 keeps casting relatively unknown (in North America) or DTV actors in lead roles. Given Taghmaoui's profile, I have a sense that Scipio is his replacement.

Scipio was awesome as the villain in Bad Boys for Life. I think he'll do just fine.

I know him. Had watched La Haine back in the days. He is a good character actor but not EX material. As for Scipio, he was good in BBFL, but not EX material.
