  1. "We weren't going to bring in an actor just because they're a big-name actor."

Fantastic, this is what I've been saying all along. All these people complaining about EX4's cast shrinking from EX3 seem to have forgotten what an over-bloated nothing-burger that movie was. Ford, Grammar, Li and Schwarzenegger did F all. They didn't know what to do with 70% of the actors so the twenty-minute finale of EX3 only focused on maybe a quarter of the team, the rest got a token throwaway insert shot here and there to remind you they still exist.

  2. You are right about Expendables 3. Managing more than 10 big names is very difficult and can generate terrible results. However, having very few big-name actors is something that hurts the concept of the franchise. The franchise began and established itself as the franchise that brings together legendary actors. It may be that now, the franchise is focusing on names from the 2000s instead of the 80s and 90s, but, equally, it needs big names. Without big names, the franchise becomes anything other than what it originally is.
